The BigBelly; A Revolutionary Trash Receptacle

is totally solar powered and uses as much space as an ordinary street garbage bin, but can accommodate five times the waste. this means that the pick up interval occurs 80% less often and the bins are capable of holding 150 gallons (353 liters) of waste. The BigBelly uses a solar powered motor to compact trash to a quarter of its original size and it uses a wifi connection to send a signal when they need to be emptied, this translates into savings of 70% or $13US million over 10 years.

From BigBelly Solar Powered Trash Cans f.

"Increased capacity reduces collection trips and can cut fuel use and greenhouse gas emissions by 80%. BigBelly also provides cost efficiencies from labor savings, fuel cost and maintenance savings, as well as environmental benefits from reduced emissions of greenhouse gases and other pollutants.."

Waste collection in just about any major city contributes to interurban pollution and waste, since garbage trucks have to constantly keep making trips to deal with waste overflow, contributing to messy traffic conditions and thus pollution.

Wow, a really robust and economic saving, I am particularly enthused by the wi fi connectivity, just what many a city or interurban municipality should have now, as does New York, Boston and Chicago to name a few.
